Dressed in their best duds, the eight contestants are milling around in the dim backstage light. After months of preparation and anticipation, only a dark blue curtain stands between them and the fame and fortune that may come with being dubbed the first-ever “American Co-op Idol.”

Nervous? “Not yet, but I will be when I go out there,” says Vida Burtis, an executive assistant at Texas Electric Cooperatives. “I’m excited, proud and honored to be a part of this with so many talented people.”
The music has started. There is applause…It’s show time!
Well, good lu…uh sorry…Break a leg.
“Don’t say that, I’m accident prone!” she says with a girlish giggle. Jitters aside and two songs later, Burtis went on to win the title of American Co-op Idol and the $5,000 first place prize.
Rounding out the top three in the singing competition designed to showcase co-op talent were Frank Carlson, an engineering aide at Oregon Trail EC, Baker City, Ore., who came in second; and Denice Kinney, a clerical staffer at Wayne-White Counties EC, Fairfield, Ill., who came in third.
