NRECA is recommending that co-ops attend one of its three fall workshops on compliance with the North American Electric Reliability Corp.’s requirements intended to ensure reliable operation of the bulk power system.

At each workshop, made up of two half-day sessions, association and co-op staff will update participants on NERC reliability standards development, compliance enforcement and penalty activities, said Barry Lawson, NRECA manager of power supply.
A panel of co-op representatives also will discuss lessons learned.
Additionally, outside counsel experienced in NERC proceedings with co-ops will provide legal insights and strategies on handling audits and what a co-op should do if it has self-identified, or been informed of, a standards violation.
The workshops will also feature discussions of:
- NERC activities in the smart grid, demand response availability data system, and technical committees areas, and
- Critical infrastructure protection efforts at NERC, on Capitol Hill and in the regulatory agencies.
The workshops are scheduled for Salt Lake City, Sept. 29-30; St. Louis, Oct. 6-7; and Winchester. Ky., Oct. 19-20. The latter sessions will be hosted by East Kentucky Power Cooperative.
Additional details, and information on how to register, will be available soon. Questions may be directed to NRECA’s Barry Lawson, e-mail barry.lawson@nreca.coop, telephone 703-907-5781; or Patti Metro, e-mail patti.metro@nreca.coop, telephone 703-907-5817.
