The next time you order shoes from footwear e-tailer Zappos.com or an electronic gadget from Bestbuy.com, your shipment might come from one of several warehouses in a Kentucky co-op’s service area.

The two companies are among five distribution and light industrial tenants to open this year in business parks in four counties, as part of an aggressive push by an economic development team that includes Salt River Electric Co-op, Bardstown.
Despite the economic downturn, this distribution hub is thriving, in part due to its location near a major interstate and a key UPS shipping facility.
With dire economic reports in many parts of the country, it’s not so much the case in this thriving distribution hub, located near Interstate 65 and a major UPS shipping facility.
Other companies opening distribution centers this year include Gilt Group, a luxury e-tailer, and Chegg Inc., an online college textbook rental site. In all, more than 4,000 full-time jobs have been created, along with a growing retail and financial sector and upscale housing.
And more is on the way. Magna Seating, a manufacturer of automotive seats, will open in Bullitt County by the middle of next year. And things are “ramping up” at a new state-of-the-art Flowers Foods bakery in Nelson County that expanded this year to churn out buns for Burger King, said Nicky Rapier, vice president of community and economic development at Salt River Electric Co-op.
