If you can, you really ought to be at CONNECT ’14. And if you can’t, you can still “be there” via your computer.

This year’s event takes place in San Antonio, Texas. Pre-conference workshops take place May 13, with the main conference running May 14-16.

The opening session features a return engagement from Terry Jones, founder of and co-founder of Jones, who gave a well-received presentation at CONNECT ’13, will focus this time on how electric cooperatives can better connect with members online, using everything from search to social media.

The May 15 general session will feature Stewart Friedman, practice professor of management at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, who will speak about Total Leadership. It’s a program with a goal of improving performance in all four domains of life: work, home, community and self.

At the final general session May 16, Todd Henry, founder of Accidental Creative, will teach participants how to avoid pitfalls so that they can do their best, most creative work.

In between general sessions, there will be more than 35 learning lab sessions. There will be a wide range of topics to choose from—everything from using social media for crisis communications, to ways to rethink your co-op’s annual meeting, and how to get the biggest bang for your communications buck.

If it sounds great but a trip isn’t in your budget, there’s a new option available this year.

Real Time with CONNECT, a new live and on-demand online event, offers two ways to participate. The first includes a live stream of three general sessions and a select group of learning labs—more than 10 hours of CONNECT programming—as well as access to the recordings until July 11. The second option is for recorded materials only and will be available once the conference concludes.

Both options include on-demand bonus sessions available online only. Live stream participants will be able to take part in interactive quizzes and vote for the best photo in the Cooperative Choice Award.

“We’re excited to present Real Time with CONNECT,” said Val Parks, CONNECT Program Manager of NRECA’s Education & Training department. “We’ve heard from our members that budget and time constraints and family obligations don’t always allow them to attend in person. Real Time with CONNECT fills that gap by providing participants with a cross-section of conference content that is accessible from their desktop, tablet or smart phone.”
