Dakota Electric Association, Farmington, was recently named the Outstanding Philanthropic Organization for 2011 by the Minnesota chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

The annual award recognizes businesses helping local charities financially and “giving encouragement and motivation to others to take leadership roles toward philanthropy and community involvement,” according to its website.

“Now when anyone looks at the past winners of this award, they’ll see 3M, Target and little ol’ Dakota Electric Association,” said Joe Miller, the co-op’s public relations director.

“Just a small amount of our budget is dedicated to local causes, but we really try to spread the donations around our service territory. Someone in the community noticed and nominated us.”

No request for assistance is too small, Miller said. “We try to help out with something” for the myriad youth clubs, booster groups, school districts and other charities asking the co-op for financial help, he said.

Employees and board members also get involved. Through the co-op’s “Dakota Cares” campaign, they raised more than $22,000 this year for local charities through the United Way, Community Health Charities and a food pantry. And they are encouraged to serve on local boards.

“We also recognize area leaders with our Township Officers Award, celebrate non-profits through the Touchstone Energy® Community Award, and provide opportunities for members to be generous with their time and finances through programs such as GreenTouch and Helping Neighbors,” Miller added.

“We salute their efforts to change our world for the better and applaud their selfless giving,” said Heidi Droegmueller, president of the fundraising association.
