When members of Jefferson Energy Cooperative visit the co-op’s headquarters in Wrens, Ga., they can step back into the early days of rural electrification, thanks to an exhibit that has been more than two years in the making.
The co-op recently opened a display of items that relate to the beginning of the Rural Electrification Administration in its building lobby.
Among the keepsakes are a 1927 General Electric Monitor Top refrigerator and a 1933 Maytag Model 10 electric wringer washing machine.
They’re part of an exhibit that includes a small demonstration farmhouse and a kitchen area that were built, in part, with aged wood from a real-life farmhouse on what is known locally as the Rabun Estate.
“We just wanted to create what a typical day would have been like back in those early years when the rural areas first received electricity,” said Steve Chalker, director of public relations with Jefferson Energy.
“It also serves as a reminder of what a great service the REA program provided for rural areas like ours all over the country.”
The tribute to rural electrification is titled “A Light In Every Home Puts A Light In Every Heart.”
