ECT.coop Staff Wins International AwardsBy Derrill Holly | ECT Staff Writer Published: May 13th, 2014
ECT.coop and its editorial and production staff are among the winners of the 2014 Hermes Creative Awards.
Three staffers were recognized for individual articles, and the digital publication of NRECA received an honorable mention for overall website presentation.
“The Hermes Creative Awards is an international competition for creative professionals, one of the largest of its kind in the world,” said Robin Edwards, director and editor of ECT.coop. “I am so proud of our team.”
Assistant editor Steven Johnson received a platinum award for his article “Deeds, Not Disease, Define this Hero.” Published last August, it details the busy professional and personal life of an operations controller at a Virginia electric cooperative, who has refused to let muscular dystrophy slow him down or limit his quest to regularly contribute to his community.
Senior writer-editor Michael W. Kahn won a gold award for “Youth Tour Teams Show True Co-op Spirit,” published in March. The story, about delegates to NRECA’s 2013 Electric Youth Tour, shows how young people embraced the concept of cooperatives helping cooperatives by coming to the aid of a young Kansas girl whose plans for college could have been shattered by the devastating fatal illness of her dad, who died months before she attended the annual event.
A second gold award went to senior writer-editor Cathy Cash for her article “Ky. Co-op Fights for Hero Lineman.” The story, published last October, outlines the warmth and support co-op staffers and consumer-members showed for a popular lineman as he battled cancer.
“Since ECT went digital in 2010, its staff has won more than 30 regional and national awards for reporting excellence on stories ranging from autistic youth and storm recovery to community involvement,” said Edwards. “We tell co-op stories that matter to people who live, work or are served by electric cooperatives.”
The annual Hermes Creative Awards are part of an international competition for creative professionals involved in the concept, writing and design of traditional materials and programs, and emerging technologies. Thousands of entries are judged annually by members of the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals.
