Copper Thieves Steal from Sheriff
One South Carolina sheriff now knows first-hand what it’s like to be the victim of copper thieves.
The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office was hit earlier this month, when a fence was cut at its Summerville impound yard during the overnight hours. Whoever did it got away with 225 pounds of copper wiring, which, ironically, was at the site because it had been recovered after being stolen once before.
Officials estimated the value of the copper at $7,875.
“It’s just kind of brazen to come in here and get it,” Maj. John Garrison of the sheriff’s office told The Post and Courier of Charleston. Officials said they were investigating some possible suspects, but there were no arrests.
Garrison said the department is looking into security improvements. Having dogs in the lot at night and installing a stronger fence are among the ideas under consideration.
