Mississippi State University beat 15 other schools to take the second year prize in the “2010 EcoCAR: The NeXt Challenge” finals, held in San Diego in late May. The competition is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Canadian government, among others.
The winning team spent a year transforming a General Motors production vehicle into an extended-range electric vehicle. The car can go 60 miles on a complete charge.
“To finish a year of hard work and long hours in first place is an incredible honor for me and my teammates,” said Matthew C. Doude, a mechanical engineering graduate student and Mississippi’s team leader.
Out of a possible 1,000 points, the team scored 844. That was well ahead of runner-up Virginia Tech, which received 691 points for its electric vehicle with a 40 mile range and the equivalent of 57 miles per gallon.
