Even before the team of contractors has applied the final layer of insulation in the Quilhots’ house and the Sept. 29 dedication has been held, the couple has saved money. The consumer-members of North Arkansas Electric Co-op, Salem, were the grand prize winners of the 2010 Energy Efficiency Home Makeover Contest sponsored by the Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas, Little Rock.

“They’ve spent an average of $1.10 a day on heating and cooling,” said the G&T’s Bret Curry, referring to the house’s new geothermal heating and cooling system that his team installed.

The annual contest’s circle of winners of $50,000 in energy efficiency upgrades is a small and happy club of homeowners. Carroll and Sue Luten of Donaldson won the grand prize in 2008, the contest’s first year; Aaron and Jerissa Rogers of Wesley were selected last year.

Without the makeover, Sue and Caroll Luten, who is disabled, were afraid they would have to leave their home. But the makeover “has allowed us to stay here. We’ve been blessed,” said Sue Luten, a consumer-member of South Central Arkansas Electric Co-op, Arkadelphia.
